Funeral Savings Funds

IFAM Janaza Services Limited (IJS) has established a Funeral Savings Fund, for members of the Muslim community in Australia.

Anyone applying to join the Fund will make a monthly contribution in the form of a subscription into the fund, after initial deposit of $500 per funeral (Note for a ‘double depth grave’ if available, initial deposit of minimum $1000, and monthly contribution of minimum $50 is applicable). The periodic payments must be direct debit. All contributions will go towards the payment of the cost of their funeral either in part or in full, depending on the amount contributed into the fund and the cost of the funeral at the time of death. Members may make a lump sum contribution or quarterly contributions as arranged.

Under all circumstance the financial liability of the IJS, the Fund and its directors will be limited to the total amount contributed into the fund by the member.

The actual cost of the funeral in Australia, varies based on location and the time of burial, and hence will change periodically depending on the fees and charges. The average fees quoted will therefore be only an estimate. Any deficit between the actual cost of the funeral and contribution made into the fund at the time of death will have to be paid to IJS by the next of kin of the deceased as soon as possible. Any remaining funds in the members account after payment of funeral expenses incurred at death will be reimbursed to the nominated next of kin of the deceased. The suggested lump sum in March 2022 would be $8500 for burials taking place at the Kemps Creek Cemetery, NSW 2178, during office hours.

It is the responsibility of the member or the Next of Kin, to advise IJS of any changes to the details provided. It is also the responsibility of the member or the Next of Kin, to setup the regular contribution via direct debit in the nominated bank account, as detailed below:

      Funeral Cost

IJS operates on a not-for-profit basis and none of its Directors and/or Members benefit in anyway financially from any proceeds. It does not have any additional fees and charges for after-hours, weekends or public holidays. ALL proceeds are used to manage and run the service, which operates as a self-sufficient organisation.

The bulk of the fee for a funeral related to the local council fees & charges, which vary across the various councils. The councils always have additional fees for after-hour and weekend burials.

Overseas repatriation and interstate transfers will be additional as per company providing these services.

The Ghusl facility fee is paid to the facility which performs the Ghusl, and the grave preparation fee is paid to the organisation which prepares the grave internally, if different from IJS.

The total cost of a single funeral fluctuates for various reasons; however, it is strongly advisable to save about $10,000 to cover the total cost of each funeral. Any extra after the funeral, could be returned or donated for IJS charitable services.

An approximate breakdown of the fees is as follows:

      • Cost of Grave $5000 (depending on the cemetery location)
      • Grave Transfer fee (if applicable): $150
      • Local council fees (which varies annually and depending on weekend and overtime charges) + the Ghusl Facility fee of $150
      • Kaffan & Ghusl $300
      • Transportation of the deceased $300
      • Grave preparation and Interment fee (including box and timber slats) of $500
      • Death certificate application fee of $88 payable to the Department of Births, Deaths and marriages
      • Basic Concrete headstone, including the installation from $750 – $1,000 (could be more depending on what is ordered)
      • Funeral Director Fee of $500 (drivers, cleaner, membership, hearse and other fees and expenses)

      Ghusl Facilities

IJS own ghusl facilities at the following locations:

      • Marsden Park Masjid
      • Campbelltown Masjid
      • Bankstown Masjid

IJS can organise the ghusl at other locations, through other sister organisations, including the government facilities.
